Report says Iran’s new leader Mojtaba Khamenei is hospitalised in Qom
A report by The Times, citing U.S. and Israeli sources, said Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is hospitalised and unconscious in the city of Qom, though the claim has not been independently verified.
The report said Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public since being selected to succeed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, eight days after the elder leader’s death in the war. Reuters has separately reported that he has remained out of public view since his appointment.
According to the account, intelligence assessments reviewed by Western and Israeli-linked sources suggest he may have been wounded during recent U.S. and Israeli strikes and is now under medical care in Qom. Reuters previously reported that both Iranian and Israeli officials had described him as wounded, though not incapacitated.
The latest claims go further by saying his condition is severe enough to prevent him from directly managing state affairs, but no official Iranian confirmation has been issued and the full extent of his health status remains unclear.
The report surfaced nearly 40 days into the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, during which uncertainty over Iran’s leadership structure has become a major issue in regional diplomacy and wartime decision-making.
Earlier reports in regional media, including claims attributed to sources close to Mojtaba Khamenei, alleged that he had at one stage been moved secretly for treatment, but those accounts were never publicly substantiated by Iranian authorities or independently confirmed.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, was elevated to Iran’s top leadership position in early March with the backing of powerful security circles, but his absence from public life since then has fuelled persistent speculation over his condition and role.
Until Iranian officials provide direct evidence or a public appearance, reports about Mojtaba Khamenei’s condition are likely to remain a matter of intense speculation with potentially significant political consequences.
