Sky Sport: Man Utd are "lining up" move for £35m German ace alongside Chelsea
Manchester United are weighing up a move for Werder Bremer centre-back Karim Coulibaly ahead of the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sport Germany.
The Red Devils recently reached an agreement with Harry Maguire over a new contract. He has extended his stay until June next year with an option for another 12 months.
Despite this, the club could still pursue another centre-back in the transfer market, and the focus could be on a left-footed option to compete for places with Lisandro Martinez.
Ayden Heaven had a good breakthrough earlier in the campaign, but has not played much under interim boss Michael Carrick, who could become the permanent head coach.
Sky Sport Germany now claim that top international clubs are ‘lining up’ moves for Coulibaly. Man United are one of those, who are closely monitoring the German wonderkid. Chelsea are more advanced in the race, having made contact with the player’s entourage over a summer deal.
The 18-year-old is described as a left-sided centre-back with a strong left-foot. He is 100 percent expected to leave Bremen, who have set a price between £35-44 million.
United could pursue deal for Coulibaly
The youngster made his senior debut in August last year and has already managed 22 appearances for Bremen in the Bundesliga. He has started in 20 of those.
Coulibaly has fared well with a passing accuracy of 86 percent. He has made 4.3 clearances and 2.5 recoveries per game for the German outfit with three duels won.
The 18-year-old has the traits to succeed in the Premier League with his aerial presence and good physique. He should only improve his distribution with age and experience.
United already have Heaven as a deputy for Martinez in their ranks, but the former Arsenal graduate has been a regular on the bench recently despite the Argentine’s injury absence.
Heaven will be hoping to play a more dominant role next campaign, but United could still recruit another left-footed centre-back, who could provide cover to the injury-prone Martinez.
£35m sounds steep for a player after just one season of senior football. United could be willing to pursue a deal for Coulibaly if Bremen accept a package worth £26m for his services.
