Michigan’s Chances To Repeat as National Champs Next Year Revealed
The Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team put together an incredible season, culminating in Monday night's victory over UConn in the national championship game. Michigan captured its second national title in program history, and its first championship since 1989.

We've seen teams go back-to-back in college basketball over the years, and UConn did it in 2023 and 2024. The Florida Gators won consecutive championships in 2006 and 2007, and Duke won under legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski in 1991 and 1992.
With the abundance of transfers and the emergence of NIL, it's more difficult than ever to sustain success in college basketball. On the day after the 2026 national championship game, the oddsmakers seem to believe that Michigan has what it takes to get the job done.
Sportsbooks around the country are giving Michigan +1000 to +1200 odds to win the 2027 national championship, the second-closest odds among college basketball teams.
Michigan's Path to Repeat as Champions
Duke is the "way-too-early" preseason favorite for next year at odds between +700 and +800. The Blue Devils and Wolverines are the only two teams to have 10-1 odds or better at this stage in the offseason, putting them a step ahead of the rest of the country.
The Wolverines will be able to field a strong team next year with their incoming recruiting class and possible additions from the transfer portal, but they'll need to replace several important players from this year's title-winning roster.
Yaxel Lendeborg, Nimari Burnett, Roddy Gayle Jr. and Will Tschetter are all out of college eligibility, and players like Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr. could enter this summer's NBA Draft.

Michigan head coach Dusty May should have even more resources to work with after winning a national title this year, and the Wolverines will be a major player in recruiting discussions over the next few months.
May will remain at Michigan despite recent high-profile job openings across college basketball. He was floated as a possible replacement for the outgoing Hubert Davis at North Carolina, but that coaching vacancy will be filled by former NBA head coach Michael Malone.
Other Title Contenders Expected to Emerge
Outside of Duke and Michigan, many of the top teams across the sport are expected to be title contenders once again next year. Arizona (+1200), Florida (+1300), Houston (+1400) and Michigan State (+1500) all follow in terms of odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, with national runner-up UConn coming in at +1600.
College basketball and the NCAA tournament can be difficult to predict - just ask anyone who has tried to fill out a perfect bracket - but it seems that many of the major teams that established themselves as contenders will be back in 2027.
As Michigan looks to go back-to-back as national champions, we'll see if they'll be able to cement their place in history - or if another team is able to assume the role of champion after a frenzied and frenetic edition of March Madness.
