Delta Air Lines Just Hiked Bag Fees by Up to $50—Here's the New Costs
Delta Airlines is hiking its fees on checked bags, meaning a $10–50 increase for passengers. And it starts Wednesday.
This week, the airline confirmed customers should expect a $10 increase on their first and second checked bags. The fee for a third bag, meanwhile, will go up a whopping $50.
Before the change, those on domestic or short-haul international flights were charged $35 for the first bag, $45 for the second, and $150 for the third. Now, they’ll have to pay $45, $55, and $200. Per Yahoo! Finance, the changes will go into effect for tickets purchased on or after Wednesday, April 8.
“These updates are part of Delta’s ongoing review of pricing across its business and reflect the impact of evolving global conditions and industry dynamics,” the airline said in a statement.
The fees do not apply to long-haul international routes. Travelers who fly in premium cabins, hold Delta SkyMiles Medallion status, have an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card, or are active military will still receive their allotted free checked bags.
United and JetBlue Hiked Fees Too
Delta is the third airline in the span of a week to increase their baggage fees.
Last week, United confirmed similar hikes to Delta, with the fees for the first and second checked bags going up $10—from $35 to $45 and $45 to $55, respectively. The third, also like Delta, went up $50, from $150 to $200.
Those who pay to check their bags within 24 hours of takeoff would have to pay even more. Previously, it cost those passengers $40 for the first bag, $50 for the second, and $150 for the third. Now, customers will be charged $50, $60, and $200.
In a statement toFox Businessconfirming the price increase, United said: “Customers in most markets will still enjoy a $5 discount if they prepay for their bags online 24 hours before their flight.”
The airline also said some passengers—including MileagePlus Premier members, active military, United Chase credit card holders, and premium cabin travelers—can still check a bag for free.
That announcement came after a similar move from JetBlue, which citing rising operating costs.
For off-peak domestic, Caribbean and Latin America flights, the first piece of luggage will now cost customers $39 to check, up from $35. During peak travel periods, meanwhile, the fee will increase from $40 to $49. For passengers who wait until less than 24 hours before departure to check their luggage, they’ll now pay $10 more.
“As we experience rising operating costs, we regularly evaluate how to manage those costs while keeping base fares competitive and continuing to invest in the experience our customers value,” JetBlue told CNBC of the price hike.
“Adjusting fees for optional services used by select customers, such as checked baggage, allows us to continue offering more competitive fares while delivering the onboard experience our customers love, including complimentary snacks and drinks, unlimited, high-speed Wi-Fi and seatback entertainment screens,” the airline added. “While we recognize that fee increases are never ideal, we take careful consideration to ensure these changes are implemented only when necessary.”
These were the first price increases for checked bags by Delta and United in two years and come amid reports that the cost of jet fuel has increased nearly 88% since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran back in February.
