Netflix Dropping All Five Seasons of Popular Crime Drama
Netflix is dropping dozens of movies and television shows from its library throughout the month of April. On Tuesday, all five seasons of a USA Network crime drama will get the boot.
Queen of the South, starring Alice Braga as Teresa Mendoza, the main character, aired on USA Network from 2016-2021. The program's stint on Netflix ends today.
What is 'Queen of the South'?
Developed by M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller and based on Telemundo's 2011 telenovela La Reina del Sur, Queen of the South followed the story of Braga's Mendoza and her dealings with the cartel and eventually her own drug empire.
"When her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico, Teresa is forced to go on the run and seek refuge in America, where she teams with an unlikely figure from her past to bring down the leader of the very drug trafficking ring that has her on the run," Deadline wrote in 2014 after the pilot was greenlit. "In the process, she learns the tools of the trade and strategically positions herself to become the leader of the cartel."
Peter Gadiot, Hemky Madera, Veronica Falcón, Justina Machado, Molly Burnett and Gerardo Taracena are some of Braga's costars. Mark Consuelos and Jamie Hector (The Wire's Marlo Stanfield) make prominent guest appearances.
Overall, Queen of the South ran for 62 episodes over five seasons, ending on June 9, 2021. If you still want to watch after the show departs Netflix, episodes are available for purchase on Fandango, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
What accolades did 'Queen of the South' receive?
In 2017, the show won Best Primetime Television Series - Drama at the Imagen Awards, with Gadiot earning Best Supporting Actor in a television program. The following year, Queen of the South won Best Film or Show Written By a Woman at the WIN Awards, with writer/producer Natalie Chaidez taking home the honor.
Overall, the first season of Queen of the South has a 68% favorability rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the show has an 8/10 rating on IMDB.
