Rare quintuplet birth reported at emergency facility in Afghanistan
EMERGENCY hospital has announced that an Afghan woman gave birth to quintuplets at its maternity centre in Anabah, Panjshir, in what staff described as a rare and remarkable delivery.
The hospital said the five babies were born prematurely at 30 weeks of pregnancy, but both the newborns and their mother are currently in good condition after receiving specialist neonatal and maternity care.
According to the reports, the mother is from Parwan province and delivered the babies 13 days ago at the EMERGENCY maternity centre, where they remain under close medical observation.
Meanwhile, the babies are still being treated at the facility, and their health condition has so far been described as satisfactory despite the risks commonly associated with premature multiple births.
Hospital states that it hopes the newborns will grow up in peace and safety, adding a humanitarian note to the announcement in a country where maternal and neonatal care remains critically important.
EMERGENCY has worked in Afghanistan since 1999 and operates a maternity centre in Anabah that provides free gynaecological, obstetric and neonatal services to women from Panjshir, Parwan, Kapisa and Kabul.
The Anabah maternity centre has long served as a key referral facility for women and newborns, with round-the-clock emergency care and a record of handling thousands of births and neonatal admissions over the years.
The successful delivery of quintuplets at the Anabah centre highlights both the importance of specialist maternal care in Afghanistan and the life-saving role such facilities continue to play for vulnerable mothers and newborns.
