Five Afghan migrants killed in strike west of Tehran, Iranian official says
Five members of an Afghan migrant family were killed in an overnight strike on Shahriar, west of Tehran, an Iranian local official said, as reports of civilian casualties continued to emerge from the conflict.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that the deputy political and security chief of Shahriar said the strike hit residential areas at around 3:10 a.m. on Monday, killing the father, mother and their three children, aged 3, 11 and 13.
The same official said four Iranian citizens were also killed in the attack. He added that three houses were completely destroyed, while four other homes and several vehicles were heavily damaged.
The reported deaths add to growing concern over the safety of Afghan migrants in Iran. Earlier reports said six members of another Afghan family were killed in strikes on Rey, south of Tehran, while another Afghan national was reported killed in Varamin.
The exact number of Afghan migrant casualties remains unclear. More than four million Afghans are believed to be living in Iran, and many families in Afghanistan have struggled to contact relatives because of internet and communications disruptions.
Afghan migrants have repeatedly been caught up in regional violence, particularly in urban areas where many live in crowded neighborhoods and work in low-income sectors.
Civilian losses among migrant communities have become an increasing concern as the conflict expands and pressure grows on already vulnerable foreign residents inside Iran.
The reported killing of an entire Afghan family in Shahriar underscores the widening human cost of the conflict and the risks facing migrant civilians far from the front lines.
