Major decision made: 'Ultimate professional' commits future to Man United until 2027
Manchester United have made a major decision ahead of the crucial summer transfer window.
Man United have officially confirmed that former club captain Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year deal with the club.
The Premier League giants have the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.
Maguire had been approaching the final months of his contract, meaning he could have walked away on a free transfer this summer.
Having already triggered a one-year extension clause last year, United were keen to open fresh negotiations to avoid any uncertainty surrounding his future.
Man United’s Director of Football Jason Wilcox praised the veteran defender for his contributions (via ManUtd.com): “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United.
“He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad.”
The 33-year-old has rediscovered top form under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
He has started all 10 matches under Carrick, delivering commanding performances and leading the backline with authority.
His resurgence has not gone unnoticed, with Thomas Tuchel recalling him to the England squad for the March international break.
Maguire played in both games and made a strong case for a place in 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup.
He is one of the best penalty box defenders in Europe. He is not afraid to engage in duels and is dominant in the air.
The priority for the Red Devils this summer is to bolster their midfield with Casemiro set to exit.
Keeping Maguire for another year will not only help them focus their finances on midfield but also ensure that valuable leadership and experience remain at the heart of the dressing room.
