House Democrat seeks Hegseth impeachment, calls Trump reckless over Iran
U.S. Representative Yassamin Ansari has called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment and said she would move to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the administration’s conduct toward Iran.
Ansari, a Democrat from Arizona, said Trump’s recent threats against Iran’s infrastructure and the broader escalation of the conflict had crossed a dangerous line and risked dragging the United States deeper into an unlawful and devastating war.
In a statement released on Monday, Ansari said the president’s cabinet should invoke the 25th Amendment, which provides a constitutional mechanism for temporarily transferring executive power if a president is deemed unable to discharge the duties of office.
She also said she would introduce articles of impeachment against Hegseth, accusing him of violating his oath of office and endangering U.S. troops through actions linked to the war and the targeting of civilian infrastructure.
Ansari argued that Congress, not the president alone, has the constitutional authority to declare war, and said lawmakers and cabinet officials should intervene before the crisis causes wider regional and global consequences.
Ansari, 34, is a first-term Democratic lawmaker from Arizona and one of the youngest members of Congress. She has repeatedly criticized Trump’s Iran policy and warned against military actions that could deepen regional instability.
Her call is unlikely to succeed politically, however, as Republicans control both chambers of Congress and removal under either impeachment or the 25th Amendment would face major constitutional and political hurdles.
Ansari’s remarks reflect growing Democratic alarm over Trump’s rhetoric on Iran and add to mounting pressure in Washington over the legal and political limits of U.S. military action.
