Suspicious Overnight Fuel Withdrawals Spike on New Zealand Farms as Diesel Prices Soar

23

A Palmerston North-based technology company that monitors fuel tanks on thousands of New Zealand farms has reported a sharp increase in suspicious overnight activity as the country’s fuel crisis deepens and diesel prices hit record levels.

Levno, which has sensors installed on close to 7,000 fuel tanks across roughly 8,000 farms nationwide, said it had detected a 13.7 percent increase in what it describes as suspicious withdrawal events after 10pm in the three weeks to 1 April, compared with the same period last year. Between the hours of 10pm and 4am specifically, the company recorded an 11 percent increase in alert firings and a 14 percent jump in suspicious withdrawal events.

Levno chief executive Oscar Ellison told RNZ that the figures were not definitive proof of theft, as there could be legitimate explanations such as contractors needing fuel for urgent overnight farm work. But the pattern is unusual, and it comes at a time when the rural sector is already under enormous pressure from the soaring cost of diesel.

Diesel prices have risen by more than 87 percent since the disruption to global oil shipping caused by the war in Iran, according to price tracking data. In many parts of New Zealand, diesel has now overtaken 91 unleaded at the pump. For farmers who depend on diesel for tractors, irrigation, milking sheds, and transport, the price surge has been devastating. Some rural distributors have been forced to introduce allocation rules at certain ports, meaning farmers are not always receiving their usual deliveries and are having to queue at petrol stations alongside everyone else.

The combination of sky-high prices, limited supply, and large unguarded fuel tanks sitting on rural properties has raised fears that farms could become targets. Federated Farmers has been working with police to raise awareness of the risk, and businesses have been urged to stay vigilant.

Police have told media that reported fuel theft has not yet shown a notable increase in official crime statistics. However, a senior officer warned that when there is a supply issue, illegal behaviour can follow. Police said they were monitoring the situation and working with industry groups.

The worry for farmers is that fuel theft on rural properties is notoriously difficult to detect without monitoring technology. A tank sitting in a paddock hundreds of metres from the farmhouse can be drained overnight without anyone noticing until the next morning. Levno’s sensor technology alerts farmers via a phone app when unusual withdrawals are detected, giving them at least some chance of catching suspicious activity in real time.

The broader picture is grim for rural New Zealand. Small towns with limited public transport alternatives and heavy reliance on diesel-powered machinery are feeling the fuel crisis more acutely than the cities. Contractors have spoken publicly about whether they can survive the next six weeks if prices continue to climb. The rural economy, which generates a significant portion of New Zealand’s export earnings, is being squeezed at every turn.

Whether the spike in overnight fuel activity on farms turns out to be theft or simply reflects changing work patterns during a difficult season remains to be seen. But the data from Levno is another sign that the fuel crisis is reaching into every corner of New Zealand life, and that the consequences are being felt most sharply by those who can least afford it.
