O’s Hang On In Chi-Town
The Baltimore Orioles battled the weather in Chicago (48 degrees at game time) and defeated the Chicago White Sox (4-6) by a score of 2-1. Leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, Orioles’ reliever Ryan Helsley made it interesting by giving up a run to the White Sox. With runners on second and third and one out Helsley induced Lenyn Sosa to ground out to short, scoring Munetaka Murakami from third. A subsequent squibber to third by Andrew Benintendi put runners at the corners, increasing the tension. A swinging strikeout by Edgar Quero ended the game, securing Helsley’s third save of the year.
A stellar effort by Brandon Young (1-0) kept the Chi Sox in check. Pitching due to a rash of injuries to Orioles’ pitchers, Young provided the team with 5.0 strong innings, limiting the White Sox to two hits and a pair of walks while striking out two and throwing a wild pitch, earning the win in the process.
The Orioles scored their first run in the fourth inning. The run came at the expense of former Oriole Austin Hays. With Adley Rutschman on first base, Tyler O’Neill laced a single down the left field line and while tarcking the ball, Hays injured his right hamstring and was unable to complete the play. A head’s up send by third base coach Buck Britton allowed Rutschman to score.
Gunnar Henderson (1 for 4) led off the sixth inning with his third home run of the season, a 389 ft. drive to right field.
Taylor Ward continued his hot streak by going 1 for 4 with a double. He is currently slashing .333/ .413/ .462.
In a rare start, Ryan Mountcastle went 2 for 3 as the designated hitter.
Reliever Rico Garcia struck out 1 batter in the eighth inning, maintaining a 0.00 ERA.
Forecasted cold in Chicago has altered the start time of Tuesday’s game. Hopefully it leads to cooling off the White Sox.
