New Cancer Institute ‘significant institutional development’
The creation of a national cancer institute is a “significant institutional development” strengthening the oncological care in Cyprus, the Pancyprian Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (Pasykaf) said on Monday.
“The success of the new institution will depend to a significant extent on its connection to frontline services, the community and the real needs of people affected by cancer,” the association said.
It added that the new centre allows for a more coherent approach to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer and supports the possibility of strategic planning at the national level.
“The experience of home care, psychological and social support, as well as the daily response to the needs of individuals at all stages of their experience with cancer is an essential element for the proper design of health policies and services,” the association said.
Pasykaf underlined the importance of palliative care as an “integral part of the overall spectrum of health service”, stressing that timely access to such services could significantly improve the life quality of patients.
The group said it was prepared to collaborate with the health ministry, the National Cancer Institute and all relevant authorities so that the new organisation can evolve into a potent instrument for enhancing oncological treatment in Cyprus.
The creation of the National Cancer Institute was announced by President Nikos Christodoulides in the middle of March.
“This was something I had promised during the pre-election period. It was a permanent request of all the stakeholders involved, and especially of [the federation of Cyprus patients’ associations] Osak,” he said.
