Iran’s Parliament Speaker Warns Region Will ‘Burn’ Over Trump Threat
Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has warned that the entire region could “burn” in response to renewed threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, sharply escalating rhetoric as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to rise. In a post on X late Sunday, Ghalibaf accused Trump of dragging the United States toward a broader and more dangerous regional confrontation.
“Your reckless moves are dragging the United States into a living hell for every single family, and our whole region is going to burn because you insist on following Netanyahu’s commands,” Ghalibaf wrote, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also said Washington would gain nothing through what he described as “war crimes,” and argued that the only real solution was respecting the rights of the Iranian people and ending what he called a dangerous game.
His remarks came after Trump issued a fresh warning to Iran, saying Tehran had until 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday to make a deal or face devastating attacks on key infrastructure. Reuters reported that Trump threatened to target Iranian power plants and bridges if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened, while also leaving open the possibility of a diplomatic agreement.
The exchange highlights how the crisis is increasingly being shaped not only by military actions but also by inflammatory public messaging from both sides. Analysts say such statements can narrow diplomatic space, raise the risk of miscalculation and increase pressure on regional actors already trying to prevent the conflict from spilling into a wider war.
The latest threats also come amid reports of parallel backchannel diplomacy involving regional mediators, even as both sides continue to harden their public positions. That contrast has underscored the volatility of the current moment, with diplomatic efforts moving forward behind the scenes while public rhetoric grows more confrontational by the day.
Tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified sharply in recent weeks over the Strait of Hormuz, regional military activity and fears of wider escalation involving Israel and other Middle Eastern actors. The strategic waterway remains central to the crisis, as any prolonged disruption there could have serious consequences for global energy markets, shipping routes and regional security calculations.
Ghalibaf’s warning adds to an already combustible atmosphere in the region, where threats, deadlines and military pressure are colliding with fragile diplomatic efforts. Whether the coming hours produce further escalation or a temporary off-ramp may depend less on public ultimatums and more on whether both sides still see value in avoiding a broader conflict.
