Winter Weather, 45 mph Winds Hitting on Easter Sunday: 'Avoid Travel'
Residents on one state were urged to avoid travel by the National Weather Service ahead of any potential visits to family on Easter Sunday.
A lingering wintry mix is expected to taper off by Sunday afternoon in Northern New England, but cold air and some moisture will create dangerous traveling conditions.
"Temperatures over much of Eastern U.S. will become cooler behind the cold front on Sunday, while Western U.S. continues to see above normal temperatures," the NWS announced.
"Cold air from central Canada will reinforce further cooling, bringing temperatures between 20s and 30s over parts of Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Monday. These below normal temperatures will gradually push eastward as the clipper system moves into the Northeast, lower Great Lakes, and Ohio Valley on Tuesday."
Ice damage on properties and trees. Freezing rain started on Saturday 3/30, and continued until Monday morning. The power went out on the first hours of the storm, and some customers were without electricity for over two weeks. Trees and power lines littered the roads, limiting access to remote areas. on Monday, the sun came out and ice started to fall off trees and power lines, creating another hazard.
Maine Dealing With Winter Weather, Strong Winds
Much of Northern Maine is expected to receive freezing rain with heavy ice accumulation and up to 45 mph wind gusts on Easter. Total sleet accumulations around one inch and ice accumulations one tenth to one quarter of an inch are possible.
The National Weather Service offered a travel warning amid the suboptimal conditions.
"A period of mixed precipitation is expected with air temperatures remaining below freezing. Expect slippery road conditions and avoid travel if possible," it said. "Very slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges are possible. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and break some tree limbs. The power outage threat is limited."
The winter weather is expected to dissipate this afternoon.
