Bride Reveals Cruel Thing Her Dad Said Before Walking Her Down the Aisle. It Made Her 'Calmly Furious & Deeply Hurt'

A bride is still haunted by the way that her dad tried to “ruin” her wedding day with three simple words.

On Reddit‘s “Wedding Shaming” forum, a woman recalled the “deeply” hurtful moment that she shared with her father before he walked her down the aisle.

She explained the situation and revealed how she reacted in the moment to avoid letting him win with his cruel behavior.

In her post, the woman said that her dad passed judgment moments before she was due to say “I do.”

“‘Are you sure?’ Those are the words my father asked as we stood alone in the church. I’d imagined the moment we might have before he walked me down the aisle. I thought he might share an old memory, try to make me laugh, or tell me I looked beautiful? No,” she wrote. “He asked in all seriousness, ‘are you sure?.’ ”

She continued, adding, “It was a question he could have asked anytime in the 10 years my husband and I had been dating. He didn’t though because he wasn’t interested in a conversation, he was looking to pass judgment. To hurt me on this day, in this moment.”

“Calmly furious and deeply hurt,” the bride said she was tempted to leave her father behind and walk down the aisle on her own. However, she decided not to let him “ruin” the day.

“I smiled sadly, took his arm and off we went,” she said, adding that she put her father aside during the ceremony.

However, he wasn’t done yet.

“As the church was clearing out my wedding party and I gathered for planned photographs and Dad YELLED at me for making my guests wait on us,” she wrote. “The minister looked at my father like he’d lost his mind. I gently reminded Dad the cocktail hour was set up for this reason AND he’d been aware ahead of time this was the plan. He just didn’t like it and thought if he shamed me publicly I’d bend to his will.”

The bride ultimately came out ahead. She said that her wedding “was full of love and 15 years later I couldn’t be happier.”

“We’ve never discussed my wedding day, a part of me wants to bring it up to see his perspective now but maybe sharing here is enough to get it off my chest?” she admitted.

Other Redditors expressed sympathy and shared their own experiences with their dad at that critical moment.

“My dad did it, but from love. He liked my fiancé very much, but I was nervous (of course) and shaky,” one wrote, adding, “He just said ‘Baby, there are two doors here and which ever one you choose is fine with me.’ One of my sweetest memories of him.”

Commenting on the original poster’s situation, someone else agreed, writing, “That was my thought reading the first sentences. But context can change everything, right?”

“Knowing this question was asked with less than good intentions, OP should have left him there standing and walk down the aisle by herself,” yet another person suggested.
