What Stores Are Open on Easter?
Easter Sunday has officially arrived on Sunday, April 5, and it's time to gather with family and friends, and perhaps the Easter Bunny, to celebrate. But, you may be wondering, "What stores are open on Easter?"
If you're in the need of last-minute items for Easter Sunday, a handful of stores have you covered. Of course, many stores will be closed for the holiday, so here's a quick look at what's available for your shopping needs.
Before getting to what's open, let's look at what's closed. If you're heading out, don't expect much luck at Aldi, Best Buy, Costco, JCPenney, Kohl's, Lowe's, Marshalls, Michaels, Sam's Club, Sierra, Target and TJ Maxx. The most surprising one there is Target. For a store that used to be even open on Thanksgiving, it's worth noting that the store has closed its doors for Easter Sunday.
What Stores Are Open on Easter? Here's the Tally of Options for the 2026 Holiday
Stores that plan to have their lights on for Easter include Ace Hardware, American Eagle, Apple, Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, Bass Pro Shops, BJ's Wholesale Club, Cabela's, Dollar General, Gap, Home Depot, IKEA, Macy's, Menards, Nordstrom, Old Navy, Petco, PetSmart, REI, Sephora, Dollar Tree, Tractor Supply Company, True Value, Ulta, Verizon and Walmart.
But, there's a caveat. Some locations of these chains will be closed or have shorter hours, so call ahead of time before going over there, or else you and the Easter Bunny may come home empty handed.
If you want a sure thing, note that Walmart will have all locations open for regular store hours, according to research from the "Today" show. That's a no-fuss stop.
Pharmacies and grocery stores that also say some some locations will be open include CVS, Walgreens, Harris Teeter, Kroger, Meijer, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Again, call ahead to make sure they're open before getting in your vehicle and heading there.
Easter Is a 'Movable Feast,' According to the Farmer's Almanac, Falling on a Different Calendar Date Each Year
Have you ever wondered how the date of Easter is determined? According to the experts at the Farmer's Almanac, Easter is a "movable feast," which is a "religious holiday that may fall on a different calendar date from year to year."
They add that the holiday takes place on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon. "The date of Easter is tied to the relationship between the Paschal Full Moon, whose dates are based on calculations made long ago, and the Church’s fixed date of the March equinox, also called the spring or vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, which is March 21," the Farmer's Almanac notes.
So, this year, Easter is on April 5, which may seem a bit early. But next year, the date is even earlier, on Sunday, March 28, 2027.
