Bruno Fernandes wants £42m West Ham star at Man Utd, poised to recommend signing
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is set to recommend West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as his successor at the Red Devils, according to The Sun.
Fernandes has had another standout season for United. He has scored eight goals and provided 16 assists in the Premier League and has been key to their Champions League pursuit.
The Portuguese sensation has another year left on his contract, with an option for 12 months, and The Sun claim his future with the Red Devils is uncertain in the long term.
United are prepared to spend £80 million on a marquee defensive midfielder this summer, but they could also pursue a secondary signing to bolster their options in the centre of the park.
The Sun report that Fernandes will recommend his compatriot Mateus as his possible successor, considering his versatility to operate as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder.
Mateus recently said that Fernandes is his ‘role model’. West Ham could be compelled to part ways with their £42m signing if they are relegated after posting record £104.2m losses last year.
Mateus Fernandes is a midfielder with immense potential
The Sporting CP graduate arrived at the Hammers from Southampton last summer. He has been one of their brightest performers this campaign alongside Jarrod Bowen and Crycensio Summerville.
The 21-year-old has eight goal contributions from 34 appearances across all competitions. He has primarily played in central midfield, completing an impressive 88 percent of his passes in the league.
The youngster has also won 5.5 duels per game with three tackles and five recoveries. He has the potential to become an elite midfielder and may not be long before he leaves the Hammers.
West Ham’s relegation could give United the chance to land him for a knockdown price. If the Hammers beat the drop, the player’s valuation could easily rise to £65m-£70m ahead of the summer.
Fernandes continues to monitor games at Sporting CP and will have surely watched Mateus’ progress. It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils make an approach after Fernandes’ recommendation.
