Four Killed in Kabul House Collapse After Overnight Earthquake
A house collapse in west Kabul killed four people after an overnight earthquake, with two others injured, residents told local media.
At least four people were killed and two others injured after a house collapsed in western Kabul following an overnight earthquake, according to residents cited by local media.
Residents said the incident happened late Friday in the Mahdia area of Dasht-e-Barchi, where a residential house reportedly gave way after the tremor shook parts of the capital.
According to locals, the building collapsed after the ground beneath it subsided, with residents saying the house had been built over a septic pit that weakened the foundation.
Witnesses said four people, including two men and two young girls were trapped under the rubble and died before rescue teams could reach the scene.
The collapse added to a wider toll from the earthquake, which killed at least eight people in Kabul and damaged homes in other parts of the city. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measured 5.9 magnitude and was felt across several provinces.
Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to earthquakes because of its location along major tectonic fault lines, while many homes in urban and rural areas are built without modern engineering standards or strong foundations.
Dasht-e-Barchi, one of Kabul’s densely populated western neighborhoods, has long faced infrastructure and housing challenges, with many families living in poorly constructed or informally built homes vulnerable to collapse.
The latest tragedy highlights the risks posed not only by earthquakes themselves, but also by weak housing construction and unstable urban ground conditions in fast-growing parts of Kabul.
