Mets Offense Feasts, Clay Holmes Dominates in Shutout Win Over Giants

For a second consecutive game, the Mets’ lineup was missing Juan Soto. Yet, despite Carlos Mendoza penning a B-level lineup, he received S-tier results.

Without Soto, Luis Robert Jr., and Francisco Alvarez taking an at-bat, the Mets offense jumped all over Landen Roupp and company, defeating the Giants Saturday night 9-0.

The lineup was anchored Saturday night by the bottom of the lineup. The four through nine hitters combined for 10 of the Mets’ 12 hits, and Tyrone Taylor who pinch hit for Jared Young in the fifth drove in four of the Mets’ nine runs.

The Taylor home run in particular was massive for himself and the team. When Taylor stepped up to the plate, he was in the midst of an 0-for-9 start to his season, and coming off an 0-for-4 Friday night. But pinch-hitting for Young and facing the lefty Ryan Borucki, he porched a three-run homer to left field to deliver the finishing blow.

The homer was the first of the season for Taylor, which gave the Mets a commanding 8-0 lead. It was the dagger for the Mets, who had been landing soft punches on Roupp earlier in the night.

After striking out in their first four at-bats, the Mets scored their first runs in the top of the second with some help from some poor infield defense by the Giants. With the bases loaded and only one out, Carson Benge stepped into the box against Roupp. The lefty slapped a soft grounder toward the two-time platinum glove winner Matt Chapman, who fumbled the ball and then threw it past Jerar Encarnacion to allow two runs to score.

Before the Chapman error, the bases were loaded via a misplay by Encarnacion. Marcus Semien hit a grounder to Willy Adames at short, but a throw a little off target pulled Encarnacion off the bag, allowing Semien to reach first base safely.

Luis Torrens followed with an RBI groundout after the Benge fielders choice, and then the Mets scored two more against Roupp in the fifth via two singles from Bo Bichette and Mark Vientos. Roupp was promptly pulled, finishing his night with 4 2/3 innings pitched and seven runs allowed (six earned).

The aforementioned Taylor homer followed, which was the beginning of the fourth outfielder’s big night. Taylor also drove in the Mets’ ninth run in the seventh, ripping an opposite-field single to score Brett Baty from second base. He finished the night 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Lost in the offensive explosion of Saturday’s win was Clay Holmes‘ dominant start. The right-hander logged seven scoreless innings against San Francisco, allowing only two walks and three singles. The ball was down the entire night, resulting in 11 groundball outs by the Giants.

From there the ball was handed to Tobias Myers, who continued his strong start to his Mets career. He cleaned up the final two innings, keeping the shutout intact while handing the Mets top bullpen arms a third consecutive day off.

The Mets also got massive nights from Baty and Vientos. The two combined for five of the Mets 12 hits, and scored four of the Mets nine runs.

Player of the Game

Tyrone Taylor led the charge for the Mets’ offense. The outfielder clubbed a pinch-hit homer in the fifth and finished his night 2-for-3 with four runs batted in.

On Deck

The Mets and Giants square off for the finale of this four-game series Sunday at 4:05 PM. Kodai Senga (0-1, 3.00 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets after his stellar start in St. Louis, and Logan Webb (1-1, 7.36 ERA) will look to build off his last start against the Padres where he allowed three runs in six innings. The game will be televised on SNY and broadcast on Audacy Mets Radio 880 AM.
