‘Au Revoir’, Fine Dining: French ‘Foodies’ Now Line Up For Surging Fast-Food Chains

French people bid adieu to culinary traditions as they flood cheap and fast alternatives.

It’s often said that ‘if there’s one thing that the French know, is their food’ – but do they, really?

Over the last few months, the French take-out fast-food chain Tasty Crousty, selling chicken tenders served over rice, has gone viral.

It now dominates social media and has become one of the most popular food destinations across the country.

This comes as other chains, such as California’s Fatburger, are also setting up in the country.

CNN reported:

“It’s become a bit of a French paradox: France is the birthplace of Western haute gastronomy and is known as the cradle of fine dining. But there’s been a remarkable shift in the country’s restaurant landscape, with fast casual and fast food chains posting record-breaking growth in recent years.

Commercial chain restaurants in France broke the 20 billion euros ($22.9 billion) mark in annual revenues for the first time in 2023, marking a 30% increase in revenue from 2019, according to French market research group Food Service Vision.”

Young consumers are leading this ‘seismic shift’, persuaded by influencers and social media trends.

And the local fast-food stars are under increasing pressure from international chains.

Le Parisien reported (translated from the French):

“The French Burger Cup is organized this Wednesday in Paris. A regular in the competition for the past five years, Christophe Dupoir has decided to withdraw from this 2026 edition. The owner of Jetlagfood, located in the gallery of the Leclerc shopping centre in Fosses, on the edge of the Oise, wants to devote himself to his restaurant. Its turnover has fallen sharply since the opening of a Burger King in the nearby town of Survilliers in December.

Accustomed to surprising during his five participations in the competition, with for example a burger with chicory sauce and octopus salami, the restaurateur who was aiming for the title of French champion must put his objectives on hold for a year. Because the chef twice qualified for the regional final has to fight a completely different battle.”
