Trump Proposes Reopening Alcatraz as Federal Prison, Requests $152 Million in New Budget Plan

Donald Trump is planning to reopen a prison on Alcatraz Island.

The White House released a proposed budget for next year on Friday (April 3), including plans to ask Congress for $152 million to reopen the island to an active federal prison.

The budget seeks to cover the first-year costs of ​rebuilding Alcatraz into “a state-of-the-art secure prison facility,” per Reuters.

The prison closed in 1969, and has become a popular tourist attraction.

From the National Park Service: “Alcatraz Island welcomes approximately 1.2 million visitors a year. The island’s layered history offers visitors an opportunity to explore the U.S. Army and military prison period through the federal penitentiary era and the American Indian occupation. Alcatraz Island provides a powerful opportunity to encourage visitors to contemplate their personal views on crime and punishment, the judicial system, national defense, and freedom.”

Trump also spoke out on social media last year with his desire to reopen Alcatraz as a prison.

“REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ! For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering. When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be. No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets. That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders. We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally. The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE. We will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he wrote.
