Actress Meryl Streep Uses Colbert Appearance to Fear-Monger with False Claims About the SAVE America Act (Video)
Meryl Streep joined Stephen Colbert and provided a prime example of why Hollywood actors should consider not weighing in on political issues they clearly do not understand.
In an effort to fear-monger support for the Save America Act, Streep made it clear that she does not hold a very high opinion of women’s capabilities.
The SAVE America Act is an absolutely critical measure that requires every American to show ID to cast a ballot.
It also requires proof of citizenship BEFORE registering to vote.
Unable to argue the merits of the Act, Democrats like Streep are instead choosing to peddle fake news.
Colbert asked Streep, “Is there anything that I did not ask you that you would like to touch upon having to do with the world of entertainment or movies or the world in general?”
Streep answered, “Oh, well, yes, I hope that the Save America Act, if that passes, all the married women that have changed their names are going to have to go to the registrar and prove that they are who they are. In other words, to your voting registrar.”
“This is what I understand. Otherwise, when you get to the voting booth in November, you might be disqualified because your name doesn’t— on your birth certificate doesn’t match your name on the voting rolls.”
“So everybody has to get And you— and this is such a pain in the neck because you have to go, but do it, because otherwise you’ll be turned away. And I think that women need to be heard, especially in the film.”

Streep’s assertion that “you might be disqualified when you get to the voting booth in November” is overstated. The Act does not primarily change rules for showing up at the voting booth on Election Day which is usually handled by existing state voter ID laws, which vary widely and often allow driver’s licenses or affidavits for minor mismatches.
Name mismatches don’t automatically disqualify anyone. The bill includes provisions for name discrepancies (explicitly covering marriage, divorce, etc.). States must create processes for additional documentation (such as marriage certificates) or allow an affidavit attesting that the name on the citizenship document is a previous name. It is not a blanket “your birth certificate doesn’t match and you’re out.”
That “hurdle” Streep stresses is one that millions of women already successfully complete, sometimes several times in their lives through marriage, divorce, and remarriage.
The process is already standard practice for many official processes, including passports, Real ID, Social Security updates, etc.
The “prove who you are” language is further fear-mongering. Everyone already has to prove identity when they dget a driver’s lisesnce, passport, bank account, travel, pick up their children from school, check into a doctor’s office or hospital, start a job, etc.
The SAVE Act tightens the citizenship part of registration. Framing it as married women suddenly having to “prove they exist” exaggerates the burden into something that sounds like deliberate disenfranchisement, rather than a side effect of a citizenship verification bill.
This is a classic example of how celebrity commentary on complex legislation can simplify or hype the downsides while downplaying the stated purpose. Similar criticisms of voter ID laws have been raised for years, yet most states with strict ID rules still see high turnout.
