Christodoulides hails govt investments in Tillyria region
President Nikos Christodoulides on Saturday highlighted the government’s investments in the remote Tillyria region, while speaking with representatives of local authorities and residents in the area.
“At the moment, we are investing around €20 million to €22m in the area. Several projects which we had announced have now started. The area is the first green community which we want to make in Cyprus, a model of a green community,” he said.
The village of Pyrgos was designated as a “model green community” in 2024, with Christodoulides having said at the time that it “aims at climate neutrality, sustainable development and the upgrading of residents’ daily lives”.
He said the idea of a “green community” is a “pioneering project which is part of the broader context of a transition towards a climate neutral Cyprus.
“This area was chosen as a model for the implementation of innovative policies, with the project including measures and actions which both improve the lives of residents and protect the environment,” he said.
On Saturday, he stressed that efforts must also be taken to “improve the conditions in terms of health and education, so that families can stay in the area”.
To this end, he said that he is “personally monitoring” the government’s implementation of policies and projects in the region, and as such, he is “aware that there is a problem with a teacher at the school, with a specific issue”.
“I want to announce to you that the issue has been resolved, because I ask to be constantly informed. It is very important, and I want to say that in the current situation in which we find ourselves, that what we say is being publicly implemented,” he said.
He then added that “otherwise, we would simply be making announcements and doing nothing else”.
“That is why I personally monitor the implementation of what we have announced,” he said, before saying that meetings will be held after Easter to review the state of affairs in the region ahead of the summer tourist season.
He then promised that he will remain “by the side” of local residents, “for whatever is needed, for any issue, any challenge which can be faced together”.
