Iran Says Afghan Nationals Were Killed and Wounded in U.S.-Israeli Strikes
Iran says a number of Afghan nationals living in the country were killed or wounded during recent U.S.-Israeli military strikes, underscoring the growing risks faced by migrant communities caught inside the widening conflict. The statement was attributed to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei and was carried by Iran’s embassy in Kabul.
In its statement, the embassy said Afghan citizens in Iran are regarded as “honoured guests,” while acknowledging that some had been affected by the attacks. Iranian officials did not immediately provide a detailed breakdown of casualties, locations or the number of Afghans impacted.
The development comes as large numbers of Afghan migrants continue to return from Iran under increasingly difficult conditions. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said nearly 150,000 Afghans had returned from Iran and Pakistan so far this year, while it also warned that rising regional instability could push even more families back into an already fragile Afghanistan.
Aid agencies have warned that many of those returning are arriving with few resources, while others are believed to have been pushed out under pressure or deportation measures. The latest violence has added to fears that Afghan migrants in Iran are now facing not only legal and economic uncertainty, but also direct exposure to war.
Iran has long hosted millions of Afghans, many of whom work in low-paid sectors and often live in areas with limited protection, legal support or secure housing. Their vulnerability tends to rise sharply during periods of political or military crisis.
The recent escalation between Iran, the United States and Israel has heightened concerns for civilians, border communities and migrant populations, especially those with limited means to move or access assistance quickly.
The reports of Afghan casualties inside Iran highlight how the fallout of the war is reaching beyond national borders, with migrants and other vulnerable civilians increasingly paying the price.
