Two U.S. Warplanes Downed Over Iran and Gulf, Reuters Reports
Reuters has reported that two U.S. warplanes were brought down over Iran and the Gulf region, marking a major battlefield setback for Washington as the war with Tehran deepens.
According to the report, an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over southwestern Iran, while an A-10 attack aircraft crashed in the Gulf region near the Strait of Hormuz. One crew member from the F-15E remains missing, while another was rescued.
The report said two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters sent to search for the missing airman also came under Iranian fire but managed to leave Iranian airspace safely. Iranian forces have since been searching the crash area, and state-linked messaging has circulated calls for civilians to help locate the missing American crew member.
The incident has raised new questions about U.S. claims of air superiority over Iran, especially as President Donald Trump recently suggested that major American military objectives were nearing completion. The loss of the aircraft is one of the most serious operational blows for the United States since the conflict began.
At the same time, the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon has issued a new security warning, urging American citizens to remain alert and consider leaving after warnings that Iranian-linked retaliation could threaten civilian and institutional targets, including universities. Lebanese universities, including the American University of Beirut, have already shifted some activities online amid the alert.
The F-15E is a two-seat strike fighter used for deep attack and precision missions, and its loss over Iranian territory is likely to carry both military and symbolic significance as the conflict expands.
The latest developments come as fighting between the United States, Israel and Iran continues to spread across the region, with strikes increasingly affecting Gulf infrastructure, airspace and civilian-linked facilities.
The downing of two American warplanes and the ongoing search for a missing crew member underline the growing risks of a wider regional confrontation, even as Washington says it still wants to keep diplomatic options alive.
