Senator speculates Hegseth is purging military officials due to disagreements over Iran
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, four-star General David Hodne, and Major General William Green Jr. without explanation, shocking senior military officials.
Analysts suggest the purge target allies of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who opposed Hegseth's demands to remove Black officers and women from promotion lists while advancing white male officers.
Hegseth has blocked more than a dozen Black and female officers from advancement across all military branches. George had requested a meeting with Hegseth about the officer demotions before his firing.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) speculates the purge results from experienced generals warning Hegseth that Iran war plans are "unworkable, disastrous, and deadly." Hegseth has nearly completely remade the Joint Chiefs of Staff, with only two original members remaining. Critics argue that the firings during wartime without explanation demonstrate reckless prioritization of ideological conformity over military expertise.
