Viral Easter candy trends pair giant 'smash eggs,' pricey treats with 'better-for-you' swaps

Easter baskets have gotten a social media–driven makeover this year, with viral treats and visually over-the-top sweets popping up across TikTok and store shelves.

From luxury chocolate upgrades to lower-sugar swaps, 2026 trends lean into retro nostalgia, indulgence, interactive experiences and "better-for-you" options.

COSTCO'S $140, 10-POUND EASTER BUNNY HAS SHOPPERS QUESTIONING PRICE AND INSTRUCTIONS TO SMASH IT APART

Here are five Easter treats and trends expected to dominate baskets this season — and what they reveal about shifting consumer tastes.

Freeze-dried sweets — including Skittles, Jolly Ranchers and other familiar favorites — are surging in popularity, driven by their crunchy, airy texture and viral appeal online.

U.S. retail sales of freeze-dried snacks rose more than 30% year-over-year in 2025, according to NielsenIQ data.

The trend has prompted brands like M&M's and SweeTarts to launch their own versions, while TikTok videos featuring the treats have generated billions of views, pushing the once-niche category into the mainstream.

Classic chocolate eggs are getting a high-end makeover — with premium ingredients and eye-catching designs driving online buzz and gifting appeal.

Many feature fancy fillings such as pistachio cream, hazelnut spreads or layered textures — a style popularized by the viral Dubai chocolate trend — that combines smooth chocolate with crispier elements such as shredded phyllo dough.

Other elevated flavors, including dark chocolate and alcohol-infused varieties, are also gaining traction.

Searches for dark chocolate Easter eggs have surged 247% year-over-year, alongside triple-digit growth for items like Guinness rugby ball eggs (up 355%) and Champagne truffles (up 33%), according to FoodNavigator.

Oversized chocolate eggs packed with brownies, cookies and candy mixes are turning Easter desserts into interactive experiences. Often sold with small wooden hammers, these "smash eggs" reveal layers of sweets inside, making for a built-in viral moment perfect for gatherings and gifting.

Major retailers are also leaning into the trend, with Costco debuting a 10-pound smashable chocolate bunny priced at $140 and designed as a shareable centerpiece.

The trend reflects a broader shift toward "Easter as an experience," according to FoodNavigator.

Peeps remain a polarizing but perennial Easter staple, blending nostalgia with a growing lineup of modern collaborations.

The brand's 2026 releases include partnerships across food and lifestyle categories — from Hostess cupcakes and marshmallow-filled cookies to Rita's Italian Ice and themed apparel — extending Peeps beyond the candy aisle, according to a news release.

Online, fans are also experimenting with roasting, freezing and microwaving Peeps, adding to the item's viral staying power.

More shoppers are opting for lower-sugar, protein-packed or ingredient-conscious treats when filling Easter baskets, reflecting a broader shift toward "better-for-you" indulgences.

Brands like Unreal Snacks — which is releasing seasonal packaging for its dark chocolate coconut bars and peanut butter cups — are leaning into demand for candy made with simpler ingredients and less sugar.

"Unreal's Easter lineup is designed for everyone — from parents building out baskets to anyone looking for a springtime snack without the sugar overload," the company said in a statement.

Others, like SmartSweets, are tapping into the trend with Easter-themed gummies such as "Berry Bunnies" and "Sour Flower," pairing nostalgic candy formats with lower-sugar recipes.
