James Garner to Man United: Strengths, weaknesses and honest transfer verdict
Manchester United are expected to bolster their midfield in the upcoming summer transfer window.
As part of our “Strengths, Weaknesses and Honest Transfer Verdict” series, we have talked at length about Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali and Adam Wharton.
It is now time to turn our attention to rising star James Garner, who is having a breakout season at Everton.
Garner rose through the ranks at United after joining them at the age of seven. He sealed a move to the Toffees for £15 million in 2022.
Strengths
Garner is enjoying a truly sensational 2025-26 season at Everton.
He has played in every Premier League game this campaign. He currently ranks second in the league for tackles made (93), only behind Joao Palhinha (96).
The numbers from DataMB show that he almost offers every trait possessed by Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.
His forward ball distribution is as good as the United duo but he comfortably beats them in duel-winning rate and key passes played.
He has the ability to play as a holding midfielder who can provide security to the defence and also play through balls to forwards from deeper areas.
The 25-year-old already has two goals and six assists to his name, a better attacking output when compared to Tonali, Baleba and Wharton.
Casemiro brought productivity in the final third alongside anchoring midfield. Similarly, Garner can do both.
There is no doubt that if he returns to Old Trafford, he will play with his heart on his sleeves as he is a boyhood United supporter.
Weaknesses
Based on this season, there is hardly any fault in his style of play.
If we want to pinpoint, he is not a ball carrier. However, he is superior to Tonali in all other departments.
No disrespect, but moving from Everton to Man United is a big level up. He would be in charge of constantly playing incisive passes forward to break low blocks.
His performances have been eye-catching but the sample size of just one solid season could be a gamble.
There are also doubts if he could develop into a truly world-class player who can dictate the tempo of games at Old Trafford.
Honest transfer verdict
The biggest obstacle is his contract extension at Everton which he signed in January this year.
The Toffees would likely demand a premium fee as he is now committed until 2030.
Garner would be a fantastic acquisition for United if they can agree on a fee of around £60m.
Signing Adam Wharton alongside Garner could solve the midfield issues at Old Trafford for the next five years.
