Trump fires Bondi after suspecting she tipped off Swalwell about FBI investigation
President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday night before his Iran speech, reportedly believing she leaked information to Democratic congressman and California gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell.
According to Daily Mail political reporter Phillip Nieto, Trump suspected Bondi tipped off Swalwell about FBI efforts to release investigative documents related to Swalwell's relationship with Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative.
Swalwell, a prominent Trump critic who frequently appears on cable news discussing the president's legal troubles, has never been accused of wrongdoing regarding the Fang relationship. Trump has repeatedly targeted Swalwell in retaliation for his criticism, attempting to publicize the old FBI counterintelligence file.
The timing of Bondi's dismissal, immediately before a major presidential address, suggests Trump acted swiftly on suspicions of disloyalty within his cabinet.
