CRY WOLF: Reintroduced Predator Bites Pensioner in the Face in Busy German City
The danger is back.
In the 1990s, environmentalists reintroduced wolves in Germany after decades of hunting had reduced wild populations to almost zero.
Whatever the result for the ecosystem balance, it was just a matter of time before the surging lupine populations turned into a danger for humans.
And there we have it: a wolf bit a female pensioner in the face, not in a forest, mind you, but on a busy Hamburg street.
This was the first recorded attack since the predators of old returned to Germany.

The Telegraph reported:
“Police said the animal, which had been roaming the city for several days, bit the 65-year-old woman near a branch of Ikea.
[…] They said the wolf might have come into the northern city after it was separated from the rest of its pack and became disoriented.
Police armed with shields spent about an hour trying to capture it as it put up a fight, local media reported, before it was seized and taken to a wildlife park.”

The attack will raise questions about the rewilding program and whether it needs better checks and balances.
It could also raise concerns among German farmers, who criticize the rewilding efforts.
It comes as the EU is lowering the protection for the surging wolf populations due to danger to humans and livestock.
“Last week, the Bundesrat, the German upper house of parliament, voted to allow the hunting of wolves in certain cases to bring down the population.”
