Luka Doncic Just Did Something in a Lakers Jersey Not Seen Since Kobe Bryant in 2006
This year’s NBA season has been filled with surprises and close games. From Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs playing exceptionally well to Jayson Tatum returning from a ruptured right Achilles tendon he sustained last season, there’s been no shortage of action.
NBA star Luka Doncic is having an MVP-caliber season. The Los Angeles Lakers guard is averaging 33.8 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.3 assists. He added to his scoring reign on Tuesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, breaking a scoring record set by late Lakers great Kobe Bryant.
Which Record Did Luka Doncic Break?
In a 113-127 win against the Cavaliers, Doncic surpassed Bryant for most points in a calendar month with 600. Coincidentally, Bryant set the record in March 2006 with 578 points.
"If you don't win, it doesn't really mean anything," Doncic said after the game. "So the run that we've been on, it really means a lot. We've got to keep playing like that."
The Lakers have won 12 of their last 13 games.
Last summer, Doncic and the Lakers agreed to a three-year, $165 million contract extension that includes a player option in 2028.
“I just signed my extension with the Lakers. Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates, and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning,” he said on X previously.
“I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.”
Doncic, along with Max Kleber and Markieff Morris, was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in shocking fashion in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.
LeBron James Loves Golf
While Doncic is breaking records, NBA veteran and fellow Lakers superstar LeBron James recently revealed his newfound love for another sport. Golf.
“I told myself when I turned 40 that I wanted to do something that was maybe uncomfortable or never done in my life before,” he told Melissa Rohlin ofThe California Post. “I never played golf in my life before, never followed the sport really. When I turned 40, I said it was that and chess; I’ve never played chess as well. So that will be next, but right now, I’m locked in on golf.”
“It’s something that I’ve really put a lot of time in. I love the sport, appreciate the sport. I love how difficult it is; I love a challenge. So, I look forward to putting more work in over the course of however long it takes me. But right now, I’m having a hell of a time playing.”
James also said he wants to learn how to play chess as well.
