NWS Warns of Snow, Severe Icing, 'Dangerous' Travel in Several States
Sure, it's April, but that doesn't mean spring has arrived in every part of the United States. Several states are expected to see the last vestiges of Winter 2026 in the coming days.
As of Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, its most serious winter alert, for multiple parts of the country.
Four of the states affected include Maine, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Maine
The Winter Storm Warning in Maine kicks in tonight and runs through 5 p.m. Friday in northeast and northwest Arostook County. Between four and seven inches of now is expected, along with sleet and ice.
"A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet, and ice will make travel extremely dangerous," the warning reads. "Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes."
Michigan
More than 10 counties are affected by Michigan's Winter Storm Watch.
They are:
- Alger
- Baraga
- Delta
- Dickinson
- Gogebic
- Iron
- Houghton
- Keweenaw
- Marquette
- Menominee
- Ontonagon
- Schoolcraft
Depending on location, the warning ends either late tonight or sometime Friday. A Winter Storm Watch then goes into affect through Saturday morning.
Minnesota
A Winter Storm Warning is in place in Minnesota's Price County through 7 p.m. tonight and southern Lake and southern Cook Counties through 7 a.m. Friday.
Price County is slated to mostly receive ice and sleet, but heavy snow (4-to-9 inches) and high winds (up to 40 mph) are in store for Lake and Cook Counties.
"The majority of the snowfall is expected to fall during the daytime hours," says the NWS. "With the high sun angle and temperatures hovering just above freezing, snowfall will have a difficult time accumulating on warm surfaces leading to a slushy mess."
Wisconsin
Lastly, Florence, Vilas, Marine and Oconto Counties in Wisconsin are under a Winter Storm Warning through early Friday morning.
"Power outages and tree damage are possible due to the ice. Travel could be hazardous. The hazardous conditions will impact the Thursday evening commute," the alert says.
