U.S. Embassy Urges Americans to Leave Iraq Amid Attack Threat
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has urged American citizens to leave Iraq immediately, warning of possible attacks in the coming days amid rising fears of militia activity and broader regional instability.
In a new security alert, the embassy said Iran-aligned armed groups may be planning attacks in central Baghdad within the next 24 to 48 hours. The warning said potential targets could include U.S. citizens, businesses, universities, diplomatic facilities, hotels, airports, energy infrastructure and other locations seen as linked to the United States.
The embassy also warned that some attackers may appear to be connected to Iraqi state institutions or carry official identification, increasing concern over the complexity of the threat environment. It advised Americans to avoid unnecessary movement, remain highly alert and leave Iraq without delay.
No further operational details have been released publicly, but the warning reflects growing anxiety over armed group activity in Iraq as regional tensions continue to rise. The embassy also repeated the long-standing U.S. travel advisory urging citizens not to travel to Iraq for any reason.
Iraq has repeatedly faced spillover from wider regional rivalries, especially tensions involving the United States and Iran. In recent weeks, attacks and attempted strikes near diplomatic and military-linked sites in Baghdad have raised fears that the country could again become a battleground for proxy confrontation.
Security warnings for foreign nationals in Iraq have become more frequent as armed groups, missile threats and drone activity continue to affect both Baghdad and other sensitive areas. The latest U.S. alert comes as concerns grow over kidnapping risks and attacks on sites associated with Western interests.
The latest embassy warning highlights how fragile Iraq’s security environment remains, particularly during periods of heightened regional conflict. As tensions deepen, foreign nationals and Iraqi civilians alike remain exposed to the risk of sudden escalation.
