Amnesty International Calls for Immediate Release of U.S. Journalist in Baghdad
Human rights groups and media advocates have raised alarm after American freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson was abducted in Baghdad, intensifying concerns over the safety of reporters working in conflict-hit regions.
Amnesty International USA has expressed deep concern over the abduction of Kittleson, saying her whereabouts and condition remain unknown after she was seized in the Iraqi capital. The rights group urged both Iraqi and American authorities to act immediately to secure her release and ensure accountability for those behind the incident.
The organization stressed that journalists often work under dangerous conditions to inform the world and should never be targeted because of their profession. It said attacks on reporters are a direct threat to press freedom and public access to information, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected states.
According to reports, Kittleson was taken from near a hotel in central Baghdad, with surveillance footage reportedly showing armed men forcing her into a vehicle. Iraqi security officials later said one suspect had been detained, but the journalist had not yet been located.
Kittleson is known as an experienced freelance reporter who has covered Iraq, Syria and other parts of the Middle East for years. Reports say she had worked with international outlets including Al-Monitor and had built a reputation for field reporting in high-risk areas.
Iraq remains one of the most challenging environments for journalists, where militia influence, political instability and weak accountability have repeatedly endangered local and foreign media workers. Press freedom groups have long warned that kidnappings and intimidation continue to silence critical reporting.
The case has also revived memories of previous abductions of foreign nationals and researchers in Iraq, underscoring wider fears that armed groups continue to operate with significant reach despite repeated government pledges to improve security.
The abduction of Shelly Kittleson has once again highlighted the grave risks journalists face while reporting from conflict zones. As pressure mounts on Iraqi and U.S. officials, media and rights groups say her safe and immediate release must remain an urgent international priority.
