U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Says US Can See ‘Finish Line’ on Iran War
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington can now see the “finish line” in the war with Iran, even if the end is not immediate.
Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Rubio said the United States believes the conflict is moving toward a conclusion, though not in the very short term. Reuters reported that his comments came as the war entered its fifth week and amid growing discussion inside Washington about how and when to end the campaign.
Rubio also said messages are being exchanged between Washington and Tehran and suggested direct talks could still happen in the future. His remarks add to signs that diplomacy is continuing behind the scenes, even as military operations and public threats remain part of the US strategy.
His comments came just hours after President Donald Trump said the United States could leave the war within “two or three weeks,” whether or not Iran agrees to a deal. That marked one of Trump’s clearest signals yet that Washington may be preparing for a military drawdown without waiting for a formal settlement.
Rubio also signaled that Washington may review its relationship with NATO after the war, arguing the United States must assess whether the alliance still serves American interests or has become too one-sided. That suggestion could deepen concern among European allies already uneasy about Washington’s broader strategic direction.
The war has already left a heavy regional toll, with thousands reported killed, millions displaced and energy markets repeatedly shaken by threats to oil flows and the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices and shipping costs have remained volatile as investors weigh the risk of further escalation against hopes for a negotiated exit.
The conflict began in late February and has since expanded well beyond direct strikes inside Iran, drawing in Lebanon, Iraq, Gulf shipping lanes and major global powers. It has become one of the most destabilizing Middle East crises in recent years, with both military and economic consequences spreading quickly.
At the same time, the US administration has sent mixed signals about its endgame. While some officials have spoken about ceasefire options and diplomatic contacts, others have continued to warn that operations could intensify if Tehran refuses to meet key American demands.
For now, Rubio’s “finish line” comment suggests Washington believes it is closer to an exit than it was even days ago. But whether that finish comes through diplomacy, military exhaustion or a unilateral US drawdown remains one of the biggest unanswered questions of the war.
