The EdgeSense platform includes intelligent shelf infrastructure, computer vision, artificial intelligence, electronic shelf labels and real-time retail data, the companies said in a Tuesday (March 31) press release.
Together, these features create a unified operating system for physical stores that helps retailers automate operations, improve inventory accuracy and enhance merchandising and shopper engagement, according to the release.
Walmart Mexico will deploy the platform across its Walmart Express stores by the end of the year and then expand it to its Walmart Supercenters. The company will also test the platform in its Bodega store format, the release said.
The initial deployment in Walmart Express stores will include 1.7 million electronic shelf labels and 180,000 EdgeSense smart rails, the release said. Walmart Mexico has 104 Walmart Express retail units and 338 Walmart Supercenter retail units, according to the company’s website.
The rollout by Walmart Mexico follows the successful deployment of the technology across Walmart U.S. stores, per the release.
“The deployment of EdgeSense will help us further modernize our store operations and empower our associates to focus on serving customers,” Paul Lewellen, chief operating officer of Walmart de México y Centroamérica, said in the release.
Philippe Bottine, deputy CEO and executive vice president Vusion Americas, said in the release that with this expanded partnership, the companies are building “the connected store of the future.”
“By combining AI, computer vision and real-time data, EdgeSense helps retailers achieve new levels of operational excellence while delivering better experiences for both associates and shoppers,” Bottine said.
Walmart said in June 2024 that it had begun rolling out digital shelf labels developed by Vusion in its stores in the United States and expected to have them in 2,300 stores by 2026. The retailer said that with this technology, price changes that used to take two days can now be completed in minutes.
When Vusion announced its annual results for 2025, Vusion Chairman and CEO Thierry Gadou said: “The transformation of retail is entering a new era that will place physical stores at the heart of the omnichannel strategies of retailers, as demonstrated by Walmart’s extraordinary success.”
