Pau Torres hails ‘exceptional’ influence at Aston Villa and reveals the club’s simple plan
Aston Villa are approaching the most important period of their 2025-26 season and the benefits of a unified and positive squad are obvious when push comes to shove.
Villa have seven games remaining in the Premier League and will take on Bologna over two legs in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The aim? Win a trophy or get back into the Champions League or both.
If a recent interview with Villa defender Pau Torres in the Spanish press is any indication, the squad’s in the right mindset for crunch time.
‘That’s the plan’
“We’re achieving good things, and that’s the plan,” Torres told Marca (via BirminghamLive). “To keep playing in the Premier League, to keep playing in Europe. I think it’s something that brings me positive things, and I see myself there until the end of my contract.
“I also really valued joining a league like the Premier League with a manager I already knew, like Unai [Emery], who knew me. He knew what I could contribute to his style of play and to the team.
“I’m convinced it was the right decision. We’ve managed to play in Europe all these years, compete on equal terms with any team, and I think we have a very good club.”
In a club being built in Emery’s image, it goes without saying that there are compatriots in senior positions at Villa Park and Bodymoor Heath. For Torres, it made adapting to life at Villa that little bit easier.
‘We have Spaniards in every position’
“It makes you feel a bit at home, even though you’re far away. They’re doing an exceptional job across the board, day in and day out,” said Torres.
“We have Spaniards in every position within the club. From Damian [Vidagany], as CEO, who’s managing things very well. Then we have many Spanish analysts, Spanish assistants to Unai, there are Spanish people in the gym, and some physiotherapists too.
Torres told Marca that Villa have money and ambition, but seems aware of the limitations facing the club at an operational level. He also knows that the solution, in part, can be found on the pitch between now and the end of this season.
“It’s clear that qualifying for Europe is the best thing that could happen to the club to achieve stability. The only thing people will truly remember is if we win a title. This year we have that opportunity; we’re in the Europa League quarter-finals, a competition we really enjoy,” added the Villa defender.
