Iranian strike hits chemical plant in southern Israel
An Iranian missile or debris from an intercepted projectile struck a major chemical plant in southern Israel on Sunday, sparking a fire but causing no reported injuries, as the conflict between Iran and Israel continued to widen.
Reuters reported that Israeli pesticides maker ADAMA said its Makhteshim plant in the Ne’ot Hovav industrial zone was hit either directly by an Iranian missile or by debris from an intercepted one. The company said it was still assessing the extent of the damage.
Israel’s fire and rescue service said the strike triggered a blaze in an industrial area that houses several chemical and manufacturing facilities. Authorities warned the public to stay away from the area because of the presence of hazardous materials, while dozens of firefighting crews worked to contain the flames.
Images released from the scene showed a large fireball and heavy black smoke rising over the industrial complex. Emergency crews later said the situation had been brought under control, although one building at the site was fully destroyed.
The incident came after the Israeli military said it had detected multiple waves of missiles launched from Iran on Sunday. The strike has added to concerns that attacks on industrial and chemical facilities could increase the risk of wider environmental and infrastructure damage during the war.
The Ne’ot Hovav industrial zone is located near Beersheba in southern Israel and is considered one of the country’s major chemical and industrial hubs. The area is also strategically sensitive because several Israeli military installations are located nearby.
The latest attack also follows earlier Iranian strikes on Arad and Dimona, which injured dozens and marked some of the most serious missile impacts on Israeli territory since the war escalated. Analysts say repeated strikes and falling debris are increasingly threatening both civilian and industrial infrastructure.
Overall, the strike on the ADAMA facility highlights how the current conflict is no longer confined to military targets alone, but is increasingly affecting industrial zones, supply chains and public safety across the region.
