Bill Murray's Son Just Got His First Head Coaching Job — and Dad Has Been Cheering Him On at March Madness All Month
Bill Murray has been one of the most entertaining sideline presences in March Madness this year — showing up at his son's games, cheering loudly, and generally being Bill Murray. Now he has even more reason to celebrate.
Luke Murray, 37, has been named the new head men's basketball coach at Boston College, the school announced this week. It is his first head coaching position after years spent as an assistant, most recently serving as associate head coach under Dan Hurley at UConn, where he was part of the staff that won back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024.
The hire caps a remarkable March for the Murray family. Luke had been serving as interim head coach at UConn after Hurley left for the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this year, and Bill Murray became a fixture in the stands throughout the tournament. Videos of the actor cheering on his son went viral multiple times throughout the tournament run, capturing a side of Murray that fans rarely see: the proud, unguarded dad.

Luke Murray Played College Basketball Before He Became a Coach
Luke is one of Bill Murray's six sons. His basketball journey started in 2007 at Quinnipiac, where Murray began as the team's director of basketball operations. From there he bounced through Post University, Arizona, Wagner, Towson, Rhode Island, Xavier, and Louisville before landing at UConn in 2021.
As an assistant under Dan Hurley, Murray was a key architect of the Huskies' back-to-back national championships in 2023 and 2024, with a particular focus on developing the team's offense. He signed a three-year contract extension with UConn in July 2024, but the Boston College opportunity proved too good to pass up.
The Eagles haven't made an NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2008-2009 season, when they lost in the first round. Murray arrives with a mandate to change that — and the offensive expertise to do it.
Bill Murray, for his part, has never been shy about his love of sports. He's a part-owner of several minor league teams and a fixture at sporting events across the country.
