Alex Cropley 1951-2026

Hibernian FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hibs legend, Alex Cropley, aged 75.

Alex Cropley, known as ‘Sodjer’ by his teammates, was a fantastic, creative midfielder known for his terrific skill and bravery on the pitch. He was part of the iconic Turnbull’s Tornadoes team of the 1970s, playing an integral role in our 1972 League Cup triumph and our 0-7 victory over Hearts on New Year’s Day 1973.

The Hibs Hall of Famer also earned two international caps with Scotland in the early 70s before continuing his career down south with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Portsmouth.

Born in Aldershot, England, Cropley moved up to Edinburgh at a young age, before joining the Hibees from Edina Hibs in the late 60s. He was one of the first English-born players to play for Scotland, earning caps against Belgium and Portugal in 1971.

The dynamic midfielder was hugely popular with the Hibs support, making his debut in 1969 before going on to make 199 appearances for the Club. He was renowned for his distinctive long blonde hair, slender build, and he had the ability to control the ball effortlessly, open up teams with his precise passing whilst also chipping in with crucial goals across his six-year spell at the Club.

He was often described as having a heart of a lion and never shrinked away from a tackle, quickly becoming a fans favourite among the terraces.

He had the trophies to match his ability, winning two Drybrough Cups and the League Cup with Hibs in 1972, featuring in all three finals against Celtic.

Cropley had keen eye for goal, finding the back of the net on 49 occasions – including the fourth goal in our 0-7 thrashing of Hearts on New Year’s Day 1973.

He departed Easter Road to join Arsenal for a £150,000 fee in 1974, before joining Aston Villa two years later in 1976.

More glory followed as Cropley lifted the English League Cup with Aston Villa in 1977. Brief spells at Newcastle United, Toronto Blizzard and Portsmouth followed; however, the midfielder’s career was cut short due to injury at the age of 31.

Upon retirement, Cropley became a Taxi driver in Edinburgh and ran a well-known pub in Portobello. He joined a list of Hibernian greats in 2017 as he was officially inducted into the Hibs Hall of Fame.

He was later diagnosed with dementia in 2020, before sadly passing away on Friday 27 March, 2026.

He will be fondly remembered for individual talent, bravery and skill, and his overall contribution on the pitch, which created some incredible memories for Hibernian supporters over the years.

Hibernian Football Club extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Alex. To the angels high above.
