Glen Powell Joins ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ as Fan-Favorite Character
Hollywood star Glen Powell has joined the cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, according to Variety.
Powell announced the news via Instagram on Friday, confirming that he will be providing the voice for Fox McCloud in the animated sequel.
"Born to Barrel Roll", he captioned the post, referencing McCloud's catchphrase from the original Star Fox video games. The announcement has sparked plenty of excitement among fans, who are eagerly anticipating Powell's fresh take on the character.
"Fox McCloud is a pilot too, so maybe Glen Powell's experience in Top Gun: Maverick will help him bring the character to life," one X user speculates.
"Glen Powell as Fox McCloud? Yeah, that's actually perfect casting," writes another.
The announcement comes shortly after Donald Glover was confirmed to be voicing Mario's dinosaur sidekick, Yoshi. Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black will also be returning to their roles from the original movie.
Glen Powell is best known for his roles in The Running Man, Anyone But You, and most recently, How To Make A Killing. After The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, he will next be seen in J.J. Abrams' The Great Beyond.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases on April 1, 2026—less than a week away. Many fans have speculated that if Nintendo and Universal waited this long to announce Fox McCloud, there could be several other characters in the sequel that haven't been confirmed yet.
The studios also teased the arrival of classic Nintendo characters like R.O.B. and the Pikmin, igniting speculation that Universal may be building towards a "Super Smash Bros" movie that brings all these unique characters together within the Super Mario universe.
There's still been no confirmation that this is the case, but the arrival of Fox McCloud (a veteran Super Smash Bros character) definitely serves as further evidence.
The original Super Mario Bros. Movie pulled in a staggering $1.4 billion worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), so it isn't surprising at all that Universal and Nintendo are clearly trying to expand the series and make room for an entire animated franchise in the near future. These surprise characters are clear proof of this.
