John Mellencamp’s Reality Star Daughter Says He Saved Her Life Amid Cancer Battle
It was an emotional night for the Mellencamp family on Thursday at the iHeart Radio Music Awards.
During the show, legendary rocker John Mellencamp was celebrated with this year’s Icon Award, following a sweet introduction from daughter Teddi Mellencamp.
Teddi, 44, is a public figure herself, having starred on several seasons of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The former reality star has also been going through a very public battle with stage 4 melanoma, after being diagnosed in 2022. Last year, she confirmed the cancer had spread to her lungs in brain, before undergoing brain surgery.
In October 2025, she announced there was no longer any detectable cancer in her body. Teddi is currently undergoing immunotherapy and is hopeful for remission.
Teddi Mellencamp Honors Dad John Mellencamp
Taking the star to present the The iHeartRadio Icon Award to her father, Teddi got quite emotional throughout her speech.
“Tonight we celebrate the career of my dad, John Mellencamp. But before I tell you the story of John Mellencamp, the artist, I wanted to tell you the story of him as a father. He’s being honored as an icon, a legend, a hitmaker. But, for me, he’ll always be dad,” she began, as he looked on from the audience.
“When people find out that John Mellencamp is my dad, they always wanna know what it was like growing up with a rock star as a father. In my eyes, it was no different than anyone else,” she continued. “He gave me advice, groundings, he would love on me, he gave all the moms chills when he came into my volleyball games and I would get embarrassed.”
Noting the many moments where she can’t believe her dad is a rock star—like when his music comes on in an Uber or karaoke—Teddi then revealed the song that has touched her the most, the 2008 song ‘Longest Days.’
“‘Longest Days’ has been the song that means the most,” she shared. “In it, he sings, ‘But nothing lasts forever / Your best efforts don’t always pay / Sometimes when you get sick, you don’t get better / That’s when life is short, even in its longest days.’”
“It was a little over a year ago, when I got sick, my life felt short, even when days in the hospital seemed to go on forever. Sometimes you get sick and don’t get better,” said Teddi. “He wasn’t going to let that lyric define my life. He stepped up, took control, fought for me and pretty much changed my life, saved my life.”
She ended her speech saying that while the show was celebrating Mellencamp “the icon” and “artist,” she was fortunate enough to call him “dad and my best friend.”
John Mellencamp Gives Award to Teddi
After joining his daughter on stage, the singer handed the trophy to Teddi.
“I’m gonna take this award and give it to Teddi. So that’s yours,” he said, as she got choked up.
“I’ve been doing this 50 years and I’ve enjoyed most of it,” he continued, getting a laugh out of the audience. “I want to say that, for all you young people who are starting out, there’s nothing closer to heaven than writing a song or hearing your songs on the radio, or having a show.”
“Good luck to all you young people, and I hope that guys enjoy your 50 years as much as I did mine,” he ended his short speech.
He followed up his speech with a 10-minute performance, in which he sang hits ‘Jack and Diane’ and ‘Ain’t That America.’
