Apple’s Next Device Might Not Have a Screen at All
Strap on your AI gadgets. The future may be here.
Apple may be preparing to enter the emerging market for AI-first wearable devices with a small AI-powered pin designed to work alongside the iPhone. While the project is still in early development, reports suggest the device could arrive as soon as 2027 if development continues.
The pin would represent Apple’s latest attempt to define how artificial intelligence fits into everyday life, this time through subtle, always-available wearable technology.
A wearable designed for ambient AI
According to MacRumors, early details suggest the AI pin would be about the size of an AirTag and feature a thin, circular design with a glass-and-aluminum chassis. Users would reportedly be able to wear it in multiple ways, such as by clipping it to clothing, attaching it to a bag, or wearing it as a necklace, offering convenience and constant availability.
Like the Apple Watch, the device is expected to support wireless charging, suggesting Apple is positioning the device within its existing ecosystem rather than as a standalone gadget.
Reports indicate the device may include a physical button for manual controls and potentially a speaker, though Apple is still deciding whether to include a speaker for voice responses or rely primarily on connected devices like the iPhone or AirPods.
Cameras and microphones could act as AI ‘senses’
A particularly interesting aspect of the futuristic device may be how it gathers information. The company is reportedly testing versions with cameras and multiple microphones designed to feed environmental data to its AI systems.
There are conflicting reports about the camera setup. Some sources say the device may include a low-resolution camera focused on contextual awareness rather than capturing photos or video. Other sources suggest Apple could include two cameras, one standard and one wide-angle, along with multiple microphones to better distinguish the wearer’s voice from surrounding noise.
However, the product turns out, the goal so far appears to align with Apple’s growing focus on “visual intelligence,” which uses camera input to help AI systems understand physical surroundings and provide contextual assistance.
Siri’s overhaul may be essential
The success of the AI pin may ultimately depend less on hardware and more on how much Apple can improve a next-generation version of Siri.
The company is reportedly planning a major overhaul of its voice assistant to better compete with modern AI platforms from OpenAI and Google. As part of this effort, Apple has partnered with Google to incorporate its Gemini AI models into future Apple Intelligence features.
This partnership is noteworthy because Apple has traditionally preferred to build most core technologies internally. But with AI evolving rapidly, the company may be choosing to collaborate to remain competitive.
At the same time, Apple continues to emphasize privacy as a differentiator, with some AI intelligence expected to rely on-device rather than fully in the cloud, a philosophy that could shape how the AI pin functions.
Not a standalone device but an iPhone extension
Apple reportedly envisions the pin as an accessory rather than an independent computing platform. The approach may reflect lessons learned from earlier AI hardware attempts. The Humane AI Pin, for example, launched with significant hype but struggled to gain traction and ultimately lost functionality after its services were shut down.
One major difference, however, is that Apple reportedly sees its AI as an extension of the iPhone, essentially serving as the “eyes and ears” that provide context for Apple’s AI systems.
This method could help Apple avoid a significant problem facing early AI devices: convincing users that they actually need yet another standalone gadget.
Part of a bigger wearable strategy
The AI pin may also be just one piece of Apple’s future wearable AI ambitions. The company is reportedly working on new AirPods equipped with infrared cameras that gather environmental data, as well as smart glasses designed to compete with products like the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
Together, these projects suggest Apple is anticipating a future in which AI is continuously distributed across multiple devices you wear throughout the day, rather than primarily appearing on your phone screen.
Still experimental for now
For now, the AI pin remains in early development and could still be canceled. Apple is known for testing many concepts that never make it to consumers, and the biggest challenge may not be the hardware itself but creating AI experiences that feel genuinely useful, and perhaps someday even necessary, in everyday life.
Still, the project shows how Apple may be envisioning the next phase of personal computing, with wearable, AI-powered devices that extend the smartphone’s capabilities rather than replace it.
