CFFA Update 3.22.26
RESULTS
James Russell travelled up to the Miles Chamley-Watson Regional in Atlantic City Saturday. It was a nasty 113 person A4. James unfortunately got a short pool and went 1-4. He lost a close DE to an A who finished in the top 16. James finished 94th.
Closer to home, we had a number of people go to the Divisional Qualifiers. I the Div II/III foil, Walter Davis, still recovering from the flu, went 0-5 in the pool, lost his DE and finished 11th. Joel Ertzberger was 0-4 in his pool, but got revenge for one of those losses in his first DE before losing to the eventual winner to finish 8th. Patrick Gadow went 4-1 in his pool, got a first round bye and won his first DE. Unfortunately, he dropped the next DE and a fence off for third, to finish 4th. However, he does qualify for the Division III Championships at Nationals. For the Y14 qualifier, Joel scared everyone else away, to get the gold and a qualification spot. The Div II/III epee finished the day. Patrick was 2-3 and Robert Thomas was 1-4 in the pools, so, of course, they drew each other for their first DE. Robert pulled out a 15-14 victory but was then on the opposite end of the same score against Shane Mason of New Bern. Patrick finished 18th and Robert 15th. Robert secured a place in the Vet epee at Nationals.
IMPORTANT DEADLINES
The Bull City Regional is open for registration. However, it has some smallish registration caps. Most of the epee events are already waitlisted. There are spaces in the other weapons, but you should get entered if you are interested. It will be held April 4-5 in Raleigh. I don’t see any of our fencers, so if you get in, let me know.
Donny Zelinski’s club (Salle New Bern) has scheduled their outdoor epee for April 11th at the Tryon Palace in New Bern. It is currently a 26 person A2 and they have spots for up to 42 people. It is always a fun event, and I recommend that all of our adult epeeists get entered. If necessary, we may be able to set up carpools.
CLUB UPDATES
Standard week of practice this week.
Looking at maybe the week of April 13 as a date to start an afterschool beginner class. Let me know what people think. To give time to get the word out and working around Easter Break at St. Mary’s, there isn’t a really better choice.
Our last event of the season, the Stab-a-thon, is April 18th. At the moment, the Open foil is a 17 person D2, with no one rated above an E. The Open epee is already a 18 person A1. The D and under epee is a 6 person E1. The registration fee jumps up after April 12.
I hope to do two 12 and under events. Right now May 2 and 23rd look open. Let me know how that works for people.
SUMMER CAMPS
From the feedback I have received, it looks like the first and third weeks will be the advanced foil and epee camps. Which will be which depends on what further info I get. That leaves the second and fourth weeks to be at least one beginner camp, and maybe a second beginner camp, or some advanced camp. Let me know what works if you are interested.
