But for mid-market and B2B firms that spent the last decade digitizing workflows, onboarding customers and building confidence in self-service channels, the timing could not be worse. Just as digital maturity was beginning to pay dividends, a new wave of AI-enabled bots that are faster, cheaper and more adaptive than anything before has begun to erode the very foundations those freshly upgraded systems rely on.
For mid-market firms, this creates a paradox. The very efficiencies they invested in, such as automation, self-service portals and API-driven integrations, are now becoming the same surfaces agentic bots and malicious AI tools are exploiting.

Recent moves Wednesday (March 25) by both Reddit and Spotify to identify, label and limit automated agents reflect a growing recognition that bots are no longer edge cases but are core actors in the digital ecosystem.
“The internet feels different lately. It’s getting harder to tell who — or what — you’re interacting with,” said Reddit CEO Steve Huffman.
For mid-market companies, the lesson is becoming increasingly clear: the bot invasion is not a threat to monitor; it is a condition to design around.

The End of Implicit Trust in Digital Systems
Today’s bots are not clumsy scripts hammering endpoints. They are adaptive agents capable of mimicking human behavior at scale. They browse, compare, transact and even engage in conversation. They can create accounts, generate content and execute coordinated actions across platforms. Crucially, they are economically viable — meaning bad actors can deploy them in volume without prohibitive cost.
The result is a breakdown of signal integrity. When engagement metrics can be gamed and user behavior can be simulated, the data that underpins decision-making becomes unreliable. This is the true cost of collapsing trust: not just financial loss, but strategic blindness.
For years, digital commerce has operated on a set of implicit assumptions. A login meant a human, a click suggested interest, a surge in traffic signaled demand, and so on. These heuristics powered everything from marketing attribution to fraud detection and customer experience design.
AI-driven bots have shattered those assumptions.
“If a human can do it, we are now at a stage where the machines can do it in plausible ways,” Adam Hiatt, vice president of fraud strategy at Spreedly, told PYMNTS this month.

Big Tech’s Shift From Policing to Product Design
What distinguishes the current response from large technology companies is not simply increased vigilance. It is a reframing of the problem. Rather than treating bots as external threats to be filtered out, these companies are redesigning their products to account for a mixed ecosystem of humans and machines.
Historically, trust and safety functions operated downstream. Systems would detect anomalies, flag suspicious activity, and enforce rules after the fact. Today, leading platforms are moving those considerations upstream into product architecture.
“Our strategy here is to go from the bottom up,” said Reddit’s CEO.
Findings in “Identity at Scale: Where KYC/KYB Touchpoints Create (or Contain) Agent Risk,” a new report from PYMNTS Intelligence and Trulioo, underscore the impact that continuous lifecycle management can have in defending against AI-powered fraud.
The current wave of bot-driven fraud operates at a different layer than traditional attacks did. Today’s bot invasion targets user journeys, exploits business logic, and leverages the very features designed to improve customer experience.
Instead of asking whether systems meet regulatory standards, organizations need to ask how those systems behave under adversarial conditions. What happens when a bot mimics a high-value customer? How does the system respond when traffic patterns look legitimate but are orchestrated? Where are the points of exploitation within core workflows?
The broader implication of the current shift is that digital systems must now accommodate a hybrid environment where humans and machines coexist. This is not a temporary phase. As AI agents become more sophisticated, their presence will only increase. They will act on behalf of users, interact with systems and participate in digital economies.
Big Tech’s recent actions signal a recognition that the rules of digital engagement have fundamentally changed. For mid-market firms, the lesson is not to follow suit in scale, but to emulate the shift in thinking.
