Fabrizio Romano has revealed what his sources have told him about the rumoured release clause in Cristian Romero’s Tottenham contract and the conversation that the Spurs captain held with Daniel Levy last summer.

Although we are still a while away from the summer transfer window opening, it already appears that we are going to see rumours over Romero’s future dominate the headlines, just as it did last summer.

The Tottenham centre-back is wanted by some of the biggest clubs in the world, and it has emerged that one detail in his contract may make it straightforward for the 27-year-old to seal a move away from North London.

It was reported by Marca on Wednesday that Romero has a £52m release clause in his contract, which can only be activated by three clubs this summer: Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Romano has now revealed on his YouTube channel that top clubs are circling over the Spurs captain, but he poured cold water on Marca’s claim.

The Italian journalist asserted that he had discovered, after checking with his sources, that the contract that the centre-back signed with Spurs last summer contains no release clause.

He revealed instead that Romero has a gentleman’s agreement with Tottenham that if a top La Liga club offered a ‘good amount of money’, the Lilywhites would consider his sale.

However, Romano pointed out that the Argentine had made the agreement with Daniel Levy, who has since left the club.

Romano reveals how likely Romero is to leave Spurs this summer

The journalist added that Romero has ‘serious chances’ of departing the North London club this summer, although he is not guaranteed to do so.

The World Cup winner is expected to assess his options as we get closer to the summer window.

Romano said that for the moment, the defender is fully focused on keeping Spurs in the Premier League, as Igor Tudor’s men sit just a point above the drop zone, heading into the final stretch of seven league games.
