MAM Urges Calm as Fresh Elections Set in Motion After Court Ruling
The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has appealed for patience among Muslims nationwide as it begins preparations for fresh elections following a High Court ruling that nullified the 2018 polls.
In a decision delivered on February 20, the High Court ordered the association to conduct new elections in line with its 1994 constitution, effectively overturning the previous leadership vote.
Speaking to journalists in Blantyre on Wednesday, Board of Trustees Chairperson Sheikh Ali Kennedy said the organization is committed to complying with the ruling but emphasized that the process requires time.
“We received the February 20 High Court ruling with both hands and are now preparing for fresh elections,” said Sheikh Kennedy. “However, this is a process that cannot be rushed.”
He assured members that elections will be held once all necessary preparations are complete and in full adherence to the court’s directive.
Sheikh Kennedy also stressed that the upcoming elections will be open and fair, allowing all interested candidates to contest for positions, with trustees committed to ensuring a level playing field.
His remarks come amid growing pressure from some members of the Muslim community, who have been calling for swift elections following last month’s court decision.
