Leonard Nimoy was born on March 26, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts. That means that if he were still alive today, he would have turned 95 years old.
Unfortunately for his many dedicated fans, it has now been more than a decade since Nimoy passed away at 83 in Los Angeles, California. The actor died from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a lung condition that is typically associated with former or current smokers. When Nimoy announced that he'd been diagnosed with the ailment, he attributed it to years of smoking, even though he'd given up the habit three decades earlier.

While looking back at Leonard Nimoy's legacy, there is no denying that he is best remembered for portraying Spock in the Star Trek franchise off-and-on for decades. After bringing the character to life in the original series from 1966 to 1969, he returned to the role in eight movies, including two from the reboot films.
Easily one of the most popular and influential science fiction characters of all time, Spock was different from the type of alien that most previous shows and movies featured. Known for his intellectual and stoic nature, the logical way that he viewed obstacles made him truly compelling. Additionally, the character's legendary friendship with James T. Kirk became one of the most nuanced and affecting fictional relationships of the modern era. Those are only some of the reasons why Spock will live forever as a character.
While he is best known for his Star Trek role, Nimoy accomplished a lot more during his career. A Newsweek article listed some of his other great roles, including in shows like The Twilight Zone, Fringe, and The Simpsons, and his parts in movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Pagemaster. He also expanded his career behind the scenes as a producer and as the director of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Three Men and a Baby. On top of his Hollywood work, Nimoy wrote several books, and fans have celebrated his poetry.
