New Details Emerge in Buffy Star Nicholas Brendon’s Death at 54
Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon had a friend helping care for him at the time of his death.
New details have emerged following Brendon’s death at the age of 54 on March 20, thanks to Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner.
“The decedent resided alone and was discovered by a longtime friend who had been staying overnight to provide care,” Zeiner toldPeopleon March 25. “Evidence indicated the time of death was very recent. Investigators are reviewing recently posted videos as potential evidence of prior illness.”
The coroner also said the late actor was “positioned as if asleep” when his body was found.
Initial Statement From Nicholas Brendon’s Family
Brendon’s family announced his death in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter last week.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes,” they wrote.
“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans,” the statement continued.
“He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was,” they added, before addressing some of Brendon’s personal demons, including substance abuse and legal issues.
“While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” said his loved ones. “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
Before his death, Brendon was diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome, as well as a congenital heart defect. In 2023, he said he had a heart attack. An official cause of death hasn’t been revealed, pending final autopsy and toxicology results.
Buffy Costars Pay Tribute
Sarah Michelle Gellar posted a tribute to her late costar in the wake of his passing, quoting a moment from the show in which Brendon’s character Xander Harris tries comforting Michelle Trachtenberg’s Dawn after learning she isn’t a potential slayer.
“They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody's watching me,” read the quote. Gellar then added, “I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
Alyson Hannigan, who starred as Xander’s best friend Willow, wrote: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”
Also paying tribute was Emma Caulfield, who played Xander’s fiancée Anya.
“My heart is heavy,” she shared on her Instagram Story. “I can’t put into words just how this has hit me. Let this clip of us giving it our all be a placeholder. Rest Nicky. Rest. I love you.”
Charisma Carpenter, who also played one of Xander’s love interests as Cordelia Chase, said she would “miss the version of the man I once knew – someone who was so warm and loving.”
She added, “He was cuddly, funny, silly, self-deprecating, and supremely talented. I loved every scene we had together back in the day. He always kept me on my toes, never delivering a line the same way twice, forcing me to become a better actor by listening.”
And David Boreanaz, who starred as Angel, wrote, “There are people you work with and then there are people you share time with. Nick was the latter. Some moments stay small on paper, a laugh between takes, a look that says we got this, the quiet understanding of showing up, and doing the work together. But those are the things that last.”
“He carried something real, not perfect, not polished, just real. And in this business, that matters more than most things. We don’t always get to choose how long someone stays in the story, only that they were here,” he concluded. “And he was …Rest easy Brother. Some people leave a mark without trying.”
