Sometimes when we feel like we’ve been betrayed or wronged by others, our natural instinct is to fight back, to get even or make things right. It happens almost to everyone, in all aspects of life. We’re born to try to fight all kinds of injustice, at work, in our relationships, with our friends and our families because we think we’re in control, we think if we don’t take matters into our own hands, we will lose. The urge to redeem ourselves can ignite a fire within us, pushing us to act out of fear and anger, not out of wisdom and clarity.
But the truth is, God’s understanding of justice will forever exceed ours because he knows the full extent of that wrong and he’s the only one who can truly bring the justice you deserve. He sees the bigger picture. God is the only one who can handle the things we can’t control.
He is the only one capable of finding solutions when all else fails because we can try and scheme and fight, but at the end of the day, we may not get what we want. We may still be mistreated and betrayed and heartbroken. We may still not solve all our problems and instead of feeling victorious, we end up feeling stuck.
I’ve seen it in my own life plenty of times, every time I walk away from a bad job, a toxic relationship or an unhealthy friendship, something better always follows. There’s always a better opportunity just around the corner or a person who knows how to love you well or a community that feels like home. You won’t even remember what it feels like to be wronged or misunderstood because God took care of it. God took care of you, and what felt like your biggest loss turned out to be the very thing that made room for something greater.
What I know for sure is that when God decides to step in, you won’t have to lift a finger. It’s like magically everything starts unfolding in your favor, and all the nights you spent feeling the pain of those who wronged you, of the people who made you feel small, or the moments you felt like the world is an unfair place, the hardships you had to endure because someone decided not to give you a fair chance, all of it somehow works itself out. It’s like he orchestrates your comeback leaving you in awe of how he handled what you couldn’t.
This is God’s mercy, this is why he asks us to have faith in him and be patient as he fights the battles that are too big for us. This is why he asks us to believe because even though we can’t see his plans, we know they’ll hold great rewards for us.
When we choose to surrender our ‘revenge’ or ‘justice’ to God, we not only free ourselves of the emotional weight of fighting those battles, but we also open the door for God’s perfect timing and plan to unfold. Although it may not always come at the exact time we want or in the way we hoped for, but eventually, the outcome will give us the peace of mind we’ve longed for.
Let this be a reminder that you don’t have to fight every battle, you don’t have to figure out how to handle the people who wronged you because God has it covered. He will fight for you, and you will be there front and center, watching your justice unfold, without lifting a finger.
